The event is organised by leaders from the 27th Derby (Chaddesden) Scout Group. The Wilmot Wander is a 32 mile (50 km) open event for both competitive walkers and fell runners, as well as individuals and groups/clubs who wish to complete the course as either a personal challenge or for the pleasure of walking as a group of friends.

The route starts and finishes at 27th Derby Scout headquarters (Meadow Lane, Chaddesden) and circles Derby. It includes strenuous hilly sections, field paths, parkland and canal tow paths.

Due to the distance to be covered and terrain, considerable stamina will be required.

The event has two classes of competition - walkers and runners.
